First launch: this build isn’t notarised by Apple yet, so macOS will block it once. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom and click Open Anyway. You only do this once.
Pro unlocks in the app you already have — paste the licence key from your receipt into Settings. On the Mac App Store version, Pro is an in-app purchase and Restore lives in Settings.Questions people actually ask
Does it work when my Mac is asleep?
Local watching doesn’t — nothing running on a sleeping Mac does. Pro keeps watching for you and messages Slack, Telegram or email instead. Back says so in Settings rather than pretending otherwise.
How does it know a service is really back?
Free follows the public status endpoint. Pro also makes a small real request and only tells you once that succeeds, so you don’t return to a half-recovered service.
Will it interrupt me constantly?
One notification per recovery, and outage alerts are off by default. If several services are down you get one message per service, not one per check.
What does it collect?
Nothing about your work. Public status endpoints and Back’s own test requests, no prompts, files or accounts, and no analytics SDK in the app.
Is it a subscription?
No. $5 once for Pro at the early-bird price ($9.99 normally), restorable on your other Macs. If remote watching ever needs recurring cost it becomes an optional add-on — what you bought stays bought.
