Is Claude Code down?
Back watches Claude Code from your macOS menu bar and tells you when the CLI is working again.
What Back watches for Claude Code
status.anthropic.com
Claude Code has its own component on Anthropic's status page, separate from claude.ai. Back watches it separately for the same reason. The CLI can be degraded while the web app is fine, and being told about the wrong one is worse than being told nothing.
A Claude Code outage looks like a session that stops responding mid-task. That is easy to mistake for a slow request or a local problem.
When Claude Code goes down, the ring in your menu bar turns red and Back tightens its checks to every 20 seconds. When it recovers you get one notification. “Claude Code is back. You can continue working.” Nothing else. Outage alerts are off by default, so the message you get is the one you were waiting for.
Questions
Is Claude Code down right now?
Back answers that from your menu bar rather than a browser tab. It reads the Claude Code component on status.anthropic.com. If Claude Code is down it checks every 20 seconds and notifies you as soon as it is usable again.
How will I know when Claude Code is back up?
One notification: “Claude Code is back. You can continue working.” No incident report, no buttons, nothing to dismiss. Outage alerts are off by default, so the only message you get is the one you were waiting for.
Does Back monitor anything other than Claude Code?
Yes. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and the Anthropic and OpenAI APIs. Back Free watches one service of your choosing. Back Pro watches all of them in the order you set.
